We sat in silence, looking out into the distance. The moon was shining bright tonight, and I could tell Cece was just enjoying my company. Then, it began to snow and she let out a laugh.

“I’ve never seen it snow before,” Cece said as she tilted her head back to look up at the falling snow.

“You have never seen it snow?” I pointed to the ground.

She playfully pushed my shoulder. “No. I have seen it on the ground but not actually snowing. You know this is the only place that it happens.”

I stood up and put my hand out, waiting for her to take it. “Well, it’s customary to dance in the snow. It means good luck.”

Cece rolled her eyes as she took my hand. “It does not.”

“I know, but it got you to get up,” I pulled her in close. My one hand was on her lower back, the other holding her hand.

She placed her free hand on my shoulder. “Maybe I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to dance with you, since we haven’t danced much.”

“Right,” I teased her back as we started swaying back and forth. It was a nice feeling, and made me think of the night of her birthday. I realized I should have been more straightforward and maybe none of this would have happened. “Do you regret dying?”

She frowned as she looked up at me. “I didn’t have a choice.” Cece rested her head against my chest, and I tried to calm my heartbeat. “I am not mad at Rhett for what he did. He always had my best interest in his heart, and I hate to say it, but he was right.”

“I hate him, but he also keeps his promises. Don’t say this to him or his head will get huge,” I said as I rested my chin on top of her head.

“Axe, it’s my fault Wyatt is dead. It should have been me.” Cece’s voice broke. I knew this whole time she wanted to get this off her chest, and I wished she did it earlier.

I stopped in my tracks and grabbed her by the shoulders, leaning down slightly so I could get on her level to look her in the eyes. “Cece, Wyatt knew exactly what he was getting into. He realized you were special, that you were the one to free this realm. He knew we need you, that I fucking need you.” My hands moved up to her face, and I pulled it towards mine, placing a kiss on her lips. “I need you, Cece.”

She blinked back her tears and for once, the scent of acceptance came from her. I just hoped whatever she was thinking was something good—maybe that she needed me too.

Cece took my hand, and we began dancing. “You told me once I fall too fast. Do you still think that?”

“Yes.”

Again, she looked at my chest. “Your heart is beating fast. Nervous?”

“No.”

“Could you love someone like me?” she asked, and I spun her out.

“Of course,” I said when I pulled her back into my arms.
